Gabriela has previously gotten attention for her feature film debut, Äta sova dö (Eat Sleep Die), which won three Guldbagge Awards in 2012 and was selected as Sweden’s contribution to the Oscars the year after.

She collaborated on her new comedy drama, Amatörer, with author Jonas Hassen Khemiri. 

 Amatörer is a tale of Lafors, a crisis-ridden municipality that enlists the help of young people to produce advertisements for the purpose of attracting a German low-price department store. The film raises the issue of who has the power and priority of interpretation over the image – something that refers to the festival’s theme of nationalism. 

“The title is a tribute to all amateurs – filmmakers and others – who defy the conventions. Sometimes that’s needed,” says Gabriela in an interview in the Swedish daily Göteborgs-Posten.  

Apart from the prestigious task of opening the Gothenburg Film Festival, the film has also been nominated for the Dragon Award Best Nordic Film, a competition that will select the year’s best Nordic film during the festival.

For those who will not have the opportunity to take part in the showing at the film festival, the film will also be screened at thirty theaters around the region.

The film is one of the productions that was previously selected to receive financial support from Lindholmen Film & TV, and the entire production team by and large are all residents of Gothenburg and the Västra Götaland region. Read more about our project financing
